Unicorn Tropes in Fantasy
Unicorns. In fantasy, they’re almost always the same: pure, gentle, magical creatures, symbols of innocence. But what if they weren’t safe, gentle, or even on this world?
Common unicorn tropes:
Gentle Healers – Unicorns that heal people, animals, or land with their horns.
Symbols of Purity and Innocence – Often tied to virginal maidens or morally ‘good’ characters.
Magical Companions – Sidekicks for heroes or protagonists, rarely their own characters.
Sparkly, Shiny, Beautiful – Often visually perfect, glistening, and ethereal.
Peaceful and Untouchable – Unicorns that are more symbolic than active participants in conflict.
Most unicorns are… predictable. Their magic is safe. Their story exists to make others heroic or happy. They don’t challenge anything, they don’t threaten, and they almost never suffer. Unicorns often are decorative symbols rather than living, complex beings.
This is why I wanted to redesign them for my novel, to make them powerful as well as tragic.
The unicorns in my novel, Banished Creatures of the Arcana:
are cursed and banished to the sky. They can’t touch the earth anymore, only drift in the clouds. Their magic is uncontrollable, dangerous, and tied to the weather. Storms rise when they rage, and gentle rains fall when they grieve. They are simultaneously awe-inspiring and tragic, neither purely good nor evil.
These unicorns are not pets, heroes, or plot devices. They are living consequences of history and magic; untouchable, tragic, and eternally haunting.
